UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State men’s volleyball team debuts in the 2013 AVCA Division I-II Preseason Coaches Poll at No. 8. The Nittany Lions face six teams in 2013 that are ranked in this year’s preseason poll.
Penn State opens the season in the Hawaii Outrigger Invitational on Jan. 10-12 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Lions face No. 6 UCLA, Hawaii, which is receiving votes in the preseason poll, and No. 11 Ohio State. Penn State faces No. 5 Lewis in its home opener on Jan.18 at Rec Hall before challenging 10th-ranked Loyola-Chicago on Jan. 22.
The Nittany Lions continue play at home for six more matches before traveling to Harvard on Feb. 15. Harvard received votes in this year’s preseason poll. The Lions challenge their next ranked opponent, No. 14 George Mason, on Feb. 22 before traveling to Irvine, Calif. on April 13 to face defending national champion and top-ranked UC Irvine.
Penn State plays 13 home matches in the confines of Rec Hall in 2013, including eight straight from Jan. 18-Feb. 9. The Nittany Lions take on each EIVA opponent, including Sacred Heart, Harvard, Saint Francis, George Mason, Rutgers-Newark, Princeton and NJIT twice during the regular season. Penn State also has a home and away series with the Buckeyes. In addition, Penn State scheduled matches with Pfeiffer (Feb. 1), Mount Olive (Feb. 2), IPFW (March 9), Ball State (March 10), Lees McRae (April 5) and Concordia (April 12).
Penn State, which closed out 2012 ranked seventh in the nation, returns 10 letterwinners and six starters from the 2012 squad that made its 14th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament . The Nittany Lions also welcome the addition of five newcomers for the 2013 season.
