Fort Myers, FL, United States (4E) – A 32-year-old man has been taken into custody Monday for allegedly stabbing a woman after breaking into a house in a gated Paseo neighborhood in Fort Myers, Florida last week.

Police reported that the female victim was sleeping when a man started attacking her on December 26.

The woman managed to fight back, and her son who was awakened by the disturbance entered her room, causing the suspect to flee.

Police arrived at the scene around 4:35 a.m.

The victim was rushed to Lee Memorial Hospital and is recovering from her injuries.

Initial investigation showed a connection between the woman’s neighbor, John Maatsch, and the crime.

After police obtained forensic evidence that linked Maatsch to the incident, detectives requested the suspect to voluntarily turn himself in to officers at police headquarters on Monday.

Maatsch is facing charges for occupied burglary with a battery and aggravated battery.

The motive for the crime is being investigated.
