Queens, NY, United States (4E) – A passerby spotted a 30-foot-long whale stranded on a beach near Breezy Point, New York Wednesday morning.

According to authorities, the whale, which was found near Beach 216th Street and Palmer Place at 10:40 Wednesday morning, is breathing but appeared wounded.

Reports stated a person on morning stroll saw the whale, half in the water and half in the sand, and dialed 911.

New York Police Department Officer James Duffy said responders are keeping the whale wet by dousing it with water to keep it alive until the arrival of experts from Long Island’s Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research.

A representative of the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Endangered and Nongame Species program said the animal could be a fin whale.
