Suspect arrested in death of nine-year-old Georgia girl
Fairmount, GA, United States (4E) – A 40-year-old man has recently been detained for allegedly abducting and killing Skyler Dials Friday in Fairmount, Georgia.
According to Spalding County Sheriff Wendell Beam, Shane Clifton Collett has been arrested and was charged with murder, kidnapping and concealing a death of the nine-year-old Dials.
Collett is being held without bond.
Authorities said Dials’ body was discovered in a wooden area near her home along Yarbrough Mill Road around 2 a.m.
Beam claimed the cause of death is still unknown and did not divulge who found the body or how long the girl has been there.
Skylar reportedly left her home at 11 a.m. Friday morning to visit a friend, crossing a 30 to 40-yard path through the woods, but she never arrived at the friend’s house.
Searchers went door to door and combed the woods with K-9 units, while the Georgia State Patrol used a helicopter equipped with heat sensors, but they did not find the girl. The search for Dials started around 4 p.m. Friday and ended around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Skylar’s mother was taken to the hospital after she received the news of her daughter’s death, officials said.
The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are jointly investigating the case.
