Menlo Park, CA, United States (4E) – The most searched term of the year, unfortunately to the disappointment of many, wasn’t K-pop song Gangnam Style. The most searched term was Facebook according to marketing research firm Experian. This is the fourth straight year Facebook has become the most searched term.

An estimated 4 percent of all searches in 2012 was facebook related. It was a 33 percent increase from last year.

Aside from being the most searched term, Facebook was also the most visited website. With a billion users with a Facebook account, it isn’t surprising that the social media giant is the most visited website of the year. Facebook received 79 million visits in the United States this year. followed by Google with 78.5 million visits. YouTube came third with 25.9 billion, followed by Yahoo! Mail with 22.2 billion and rounded out by Yahoo! with 20.8 billion.

Found in the top 10 most searched website were four variations of the term “Facebook.”

Experian added, “Navigational searches continue to dominate the top search results as users continue to visit their favorite sites via search engines instead of directly entering a web address into their browsers URL bar.”
