HYDE — After losing to Punxsutawney last year for the first time in a generation, the Clearfield Bison wrestling team got their payback with a 63-12 thumping of the Punxsutawney Chucks on Thursday night at the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.
Both teams evened their records with the result – Clearfield at 2-2 and Punxsutawney at 1-1.
With the win, Bison Head Coach Jeff Aveni became the second winningest coach in Bison history with his 124th victory, one more than Garry Barton who coached the state champions of 1986. Legend Art Weiss is the leader with 184 wins.
The Bison got off to a hot start by picking up first period falls in the first two contested weight classes.
At 113 Bison frosh Josiah McClarren (2-4) was out to a 5-0 lead when he sunk a deep half and pinned junior Andrew Bullers in 1:44.
Bison sophomore Noah Cline (7-2) also had a 5-0 lead when he mixed Stephanie Smith at the 1:45 mark to jump the Bison out to a quick 12-0 lead.
Punxsy’s Joel Bowers put the Chucks’ first points on the board with a convincing 15-2 win over Jon Sponsler (2-5) at 126.
In the most anticipated match of the night, Bison senior and defending district champion Dylan Graham faced off with heralded freshman and PJW state champion Kaleb Young at 132. After six minutes of wrestling the two were only able to trade escapes so the bout went to overtime at 1-1. Once there, Graham (7-1) wasted little time in hitting a strong double-leg takedown to notch the win 3-1 and up the Bison lead to 15-4.
At 138 Bison standout Christian Stone (8-0) wasted little time in disposing of Josh Schuckers in 38 seconds with a near cradle.
For the first two and a half periods of the match at 145 between Clearfield’s Zach Fox and Punxsutawney’s Perry Arrington it was anybody’s ball game. But in the third period of a 5-3 match Arrington hit a deep double leg which Fox (1-2) ended up on his back and it was over just like that in 5:16. The 21-10 deficit was as close as Punxsy would draw the rest of the night.
Bison senior Nolan Barger (7-1) built up a 5-0 lead then threw in a half and a double-leg grapevine to pick up the fall over Jeffery Bottenhorn right before the first period buzzer at the 1:56 mark to up the Bison lead to 27-10.
Despite being down 2-0 after the first period, Bison Grant Climie (1-4) picked up his first varsity win when he reversed and headlocked Justice Vance in 3:12 at 160.
Mike Beck (3-3) then bumped up to 170 for the first time this year and wasted little time headlocking Keegan Fischer and finishing the job in 20 seconds.
Josh Kennedy was involved in his typical physical match with Travis Perry at 182. Kennedy (1-3) was twice called for illegal slams in the 5-1 loss. Perry felt the need to retaliate after the match with a shove that cost the Chucks a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct setting the score at 39-12.
At 195 the Bison got back on track with another fall, this one by Jake Verchick (3-4) when he arm-barred Brandon Wingert in 3:40.
The Bison falls just kept on coming at 220 when Shane Billings (1-2) threw in a deep “sneaky Pete” to deck Austin Covatch in 1:11.
Sophomore heavyweight Curt Mignot (1-5) picked up his first varsity win the easy way via a forfeit to extend the Bison lead to 57-12 as the match turned the corner to 106..
In perhaps the most entertaining match of the night, Bison Logan Gilbert and Chuck Elijah Lambiotte, both promising freshman, exchanged takedowns, reversals and nearfalls for a 7-5 Lambiotte lead heading to the second period. The fun didn’t stop there as Lambiotte reversed to up his lead to 9-5 early on. Gilbert (6-4) then reversed Lambiotte to his back and sunk the half to end the Chuck’s night in 3:37.
Clearfield will next be in action when they hit the tournament trail for their annual trek to Meadville and the Tool City Tourney on January 4 and 5.
