Columbus, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Junior Deshaun Thomas submitted a double-digit performance for the 10th time this season, firing 21 points, while Lenzelle Smith, Jr. added 14 as No. 7 Ohio State defeated Winthrop, 65-55, for its fifth straight victory Tuesday at Value City Arena.
With his output, Thomas moved to No. 41 on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list as the Buckeyes clinched their ninth win in 10 games. He is just seven points away from surpassing Ron Sepic for 40th overall.
The game marked the first meeting between Ohio State and Winthrop, a member of the Big South Conference. Overall, OSU holds a 15-0 all-time record against teams representing the Big South.
Thomas grabbed nine rebounds and issued a career-high four assists and buried three 3-pointers in the match. He needs just two more three-pointers to reach 100 for his career.
Aaron Craft added eight points while Evan Ravenel and Amir Williams scored seven points each as the Buckeyes extended their non-conference home winning streak to 39-consecutive games, the fifth longest in the nation.
Derrick Henry was the only scorer in double digit with 12 points for the Eagles, who dropped three of their last five games for a 4-5 record. Gideon Gamble added nine and Joab Jerome had eight for Winthrop.
The Buckeyes were leading by just 47-44 with 10:42 remaining in the second half when they unleashed a 15-3 run capped by Smith’s layup to put the game away, 62-47.
James Bourne made two foul shots to bring Winthrop within seven with one minute left in the game but the Buckeyes sank three foul shots to cap the win.
Ohio State held a 24-8 advantage in points in the paint and scored 17 points off Winthrop’s 14 turnovers.
