Bird flu kills Indonesian toddler; worldwide death toll reaches 360

Bogor, Indonesia (4E) – Indonesian Health Ministry on Tuesday confirmed the death of a four-year-old boy from bird flu in Bogor district in western Java.

The boy was admitted to hospital with high fever. He reportedly died on December 6. In a statement to AFP, Rita Kusriastuti, head of animal-borne infectious diseases at the ministry, said that the boy contracted the H5N1 (bird flu) virus from chickens at his home with whom he has been playing.

The bird flu has so far claimed 360 lives worldwide and Indonesia is the hardest hit with 160 fatalities, the World Health Organization figures showed.
