CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Golden Tide wrestling team picked up win number one on the season Thursday night at Patton Hall, defeating Brockway 48-32.
With the victory Curwensville is now 1-1 in 2012-13.
In a match that had both teams in the lead twice, the Golden Tide picked up six pins and two forfeits to fuel the win.
With Curwensville trailing 6-0 after the 138 bout, Trey McKenzie, a Tide junior, knotted things up with a first period fall over Haundry Muir in 1:46 at 145 pounds.
Dakota Royer at 152 and Zach Tibbens at 160 followed with two impressive pins for Curwensville as Royer took 2:25 to press Mitchell Overbeck to the mat followed by Tibbens picking up the quickest pin of the evening taking just 20 seconds to deck Brandon Little.
The two falls put the Tide in the lead 18-6 .
The Rovers would then win the next three bouts, 170, 182 and 195 to retake the lead over host Curwensville at 21-18.
Curwensville head coach Duane Wriglesworth then liked what he saw in his two heavyweights, Ricky Magnuson and Brad Stubbs, both wrestling for the first time this year, “Our two heavyweights wrestled well for the first time out, picking up two pins that put us out in front for good. Those were both huge efforts.”
At 220, Magnuson took Hunter Richardson to his back locking up the fall in 3:42 which gave the Tide the lead again at 24-21. A lead they would keep for good.
Stubbs, wrestling at 285, also went into the second period before pinning Gavin Yahner in 3:35 which stretched the Curwensville margin to nine, 30-21.
The Rovers would draw close though, as at 106 Ryan Carlson picked up a fall to cut the Tide margin to 30-27. Unfortunately for Brockway that would be the closest it would come to taking the lead again.
Then came two forfeits for Curwensville that would wrap up the victory when Sam Bressler at 113 and Aryan Shearer at 120 would have their arms raised in victory moving the Golden Tide out in front 42-27 with two bouts remaining.
The two squads would split the final two bouts with Curwensville winning the last match, at 132, as sophomore Jake Lancaster pinned Jack Glasl in 3:11. The two wrestlers ended the first two minutes scoreless with Lancaster pressing the action in the second period to get the win. An effort not lost on Wriglesworth, “Jake (Lancaster) just showed pure, sheer determination in his bout to get the pin for us.”
The Tide mentor closed with, “This really was a total team effort and I was very pleased with how we wrestled after getting beat by West Branch a couple of nights ago. Brockway moved some ninth graders up who are very athletic and I told our guys we needed to pick up extra points whenever we get the opportunity. The guys responded and did just that, which was big for us in getting our first win.”
Last year the Tide defeated the Rovers in Brockway 54-18.
The junior high match went to Curwensville by a score of 72-8 as the young Golden Tide improve to 2-0 on the year.
Curwensville is now off until after the holidays and won’t wrestle again until January 3 when they journey to Punxsutawney to meet up with the Chucks. Last season the Chucks prevailed on the Tide’s home mat, 38-31.
