Bison Wrestlers Lose Thriller to BEA 37-28, Stone Picks Up Career Win 100

WINGATE — In a roller coaster of a match that wasn’t decided until the final bout of the night on the Bald Eagle Area home mat, the hosts held off the pesky Bison by a score of 37-28.

The Bison jumped out to a 9-0 lead that eventually turned in to a 31-9 deficit before the Bison stampeded back to within 31-28, only to give up a fall in the last bout to drop the match by nine points.

Starting the night off at 152 Bison senior Nolan Barger (5-1) made short work of BEA junior Dennis Shaw (0-3) by picking up a fall in 50 seconds to send the Bison to an early 6-0 lead.

Clearfield junior Mike Beck (1-3) picked up his first win on the young season over sophomore Mitchell Taylor (1-3) by an 8-3 score to jump the Bison lead to 9-0. Beck led from the get-go as he picked up the opening takedown and added two nearfall points to build a 4-0 lead that he never relinquished.

In a physically contested match at 170,  BEA’s senior Ben Verbitsky (1-2) started to swing the momentum towards the home team when he broke open a tight match in the third period over Clearfield soph Josh Kennedy (0-2). After scoring a third period takedown, Kennedy pulled to within four at 7-3, but Verbitsky scored eight out the bout’s last nine points to pick up the major at 15-4.

Clearfield then forfeited to BEA stud Jake Taylor (5-0) at 182, giving the Eagles the lead after four bouts 10-9.

The BEA heavyweights then went to work on the overmatched Bison by picking up first period falls at 195, 220, and heavyweight to give the home team a 28-9 lead when the match turned the corner and headed back to the lightweights, where Clearfield then had the advantage. The only question was whether the Bison would score enough to overcome the almost 20-point deficit.

At 106, freshman Coby Bainey (1-2) upset Clearfield frosh Logan Gilbert (4-4) 6-2 to really help the BEA cause. Tied 2-2 after a Gilbert reversal in the second, Bainey then added a reversal of his own later in the period, then added another one in the third to set the final score and put BEA up by what seemed like an insurmountable 31-9 lead

Clearfield freshman Josiah McClarren (1-3) then picked up his first varsity victory with a hard fought 4-1 win over another freshman Mike Kachik (0-3).

Clearfield really started to pick up some steam at 120 when sophomore Noah Cline (5-2) rode out BEA senior Travis Geidroc (3-2) in the third period to hang on for a 4-3 win. In the only rematch from last year’s dual meet, won by BEA 40-26, Geidroc had beaten the Bison freshman 7-3.

At 126 sophomore Jon Sponsler (2-3) used a pair of takedowns and some strong riding to shut out BEA junior Jacob Noll (0-3) 4-0 to close the gap to 31-18 with three bouts to go.

Clearfield had the decided advantage in the next two bouts, but the great unknown was going to be at the bout’s finish at 145 where BEA didn’t even know who Clearfield would send out.

The two Bison seniors at 132 and 138 didn’t disappoint as they closed the margin to 31-28.

Dylan Graham (5-1) used five takedowns to earn a major decision over sophomore Clint McCaslin(1-3) 11-3.

Four year starter Christian Stone (6-0) did his job by picking up a 33 second fall to give the Bison some hope for the dual meet victory. Stone’s win was the 100th of his stellar career for the Clearfield Bison! Many fans in the stands showed their appreciation of Stone with their signs that simply said “100”.

With the match on the line Clearfield sent out junior Zach Fox to wrestle his first ever varsity match. BEA sent out senior Joseph Powers (3-2). Powers picked up the opening takedown, but a game Fox reversed to even the score at 2-2 heading to the second period. The Bison faithful was “feelin’ it”, but Fox couldn’t get out after picking the down position. Powers picked up two nearfall points to take a 4-2 lead heading to the final period. Powers took down for the third. Once there, he reversed Fox and pressed him to the mat for the fall giving the Eagles a nailbiter win over the Bison 37-28.

The Clearfield junior high also lost a barnburner 48-45 to drop to 1-1. They will host the 3rd Annual Ink and Threadz Duals on Saturday.

Clearfield (0-2) will take to the mats on Tuesday December 18 when they host the Central Dragons.
