Clearfield Falters after Strong First Quarter to Fall to Undefeated Central

MARTINSBURG — Two nights after opening the 2012-2013 season with a victory over rival Curwensville, the Clearfield Bison basketball squad had to pack up their bus for a long road trip for their second game of the season.  It would be an early test for the Bison as head coach Forrest Campman and his squad headed to Martinsburg to face the undefeated Central Dragons.

The first quarter of the game saw the Bison jump out to an early lead, and after eight minutes they held a five-point advantage over the Dragons, carrying over the momentum from Monday night’s victory.

But, the next 24 minutes saw why Central already had three victories on the season, and no losses.

The Dragons put up double-digit scoring in both the second and third quarters, and held the Bison to just 16 points over the final three quarters, including just eight in the second half, to cruise to a 50-29 victory.

Trey Jordan led the Bison in scoring with 13 points, while Jonathan Janocko added another 10, but what really hurt the Bison was their shooting from the line.  Combined, the team only hit four of their 11 free throws.

“Speed and quickness wore us down,” said Campman.  “They have a solid ball-handling and shooting ball club and harass defensively.”

At the same time, three Dragon players hit double-digits, as Lucas Patterson had a game-high 18 points, while Zach Slagenweit added another 12 of his own and Austin Cunningham added another 10.

Clearfield (1-1) has two days before their next contest, which will be Friday night as they will host the Huntingdon Bearcats at the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.  Tip off for the junior varsity contest is set for 6 p.m. with the varsity contest set for approximately 7:30.
