UAE opens new container port
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (4E) – United Arab Emirates President Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other leaders inaugurated the Port of Khalifa, northeast of Abu Dhabi, on Wednesday.
Al Nahyan said in a speech that the modern port will become one of the most important ports for trade in the Middle East because of its strategic location. The Khalifa port will also further increase the rate of national economic growth, according to the president.
Dr. Sultan Jaber, chairman of Abu Dhabi Ports Company, said the port will handle all types of cargoes and huge ships with its depth of 16 meters. The port’s capacity is 2.5 million 20-foot containers expandable to 5 million within five years.
The port will be connected with Etihad rail by 2016 and with all UAE ports by 2017.
The Khalifa port was opened at exactly 12:12:12 on a date with similar three 12s corresponding to month, day and year. The numbers are considered auspicious in Chinese belief.
Aside from Al Nahyan, Vice President Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the ruler of Dubai, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed al Nahyan, Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal and other Shaikhs and senior officials.
