DuBois Heavyweights Too Much for Clearfield Bison Wrestlers

CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Area High School wrestling team opened up their dual meet season Tuesday night by hosting District 9 rival DuBois at the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.

After seven of the 14 weights were contested, the home team led by a 21-14 score. Unfortunately for the Bison, the DuBois heavyweights then scored a perfect 42 points by picking up five falls and two forfeits to close out the Bison 56-21.

Clearfield drops to 0-1 on the season, while DuBois evens their tally at 1-1 after a season opening loss to Erie McDowell.

The dual meet began at 113 pounds where Clearfield freshman Josiah McClarren ran into senior letterwinner Bryce Swauger. Swauger was too much for the Bison youngster as he ran up a 17-1 tech fall in 5:03 to jump the Beavers out to an early 5-0 lead.

Bison sophomore Noah Cline gave Clearfield its first lead of the night, 6-5, by building up an 8-0 lead and then pinning Beaver Chris Cox in 4:21.

Cody Cox then put the Beavers back on top with a hard fought win over Bison sophomore Jon Sponsler, 5-3. Down 4-0 early, Sponsler made a valiant effort to close the gap to 4-3 heading to the final period, but just didn’t have enough gas in the tank to pull off the comeback.

Senior Dylan Graham put the Bison back in the lead at 12-8 after his first period fall over Austin Gahr in 1:41.

The feature bout of the night then ensued at 138 where district champions Christain Stone of Clearfield and Garrett Brown of DuBois locked horns. After a scoreless first period, the senior standouts traded escapes and headed to the final period tied at one all. After no one could garner a takedown in the third period the match headed to overtime. Match aggressor Stone finally notched the winning takedown to win 3-1 and raise his record to 5-0 on the young season.

DJ Carney closed the gap for DuBois to 15-14 after disposing of Grant Climie in 2:34 at 145.

The Bison would pick up their last win of the night at 152 when Nolan Barger built up an 8-0 first period lead before pinning Jacob Munz in 1:39.

Then things turned ugly for the Bison when the Beavers were able to flex their muscle and roll through the next seven matches.

Mike Kennelly started the ball rolling with a fall in 4:16 over Mike Beck. Then state qualifier Tom Sleigh made short work of Josh Kennedy in 1:26 to give DuBois the lead for the rest of the night.

In a physical match at 182, Bison Jake Verchick led 2-1 after the first period but then was reversed and spladled for the fall in 2:25.

Clearfield then forfeited at 195 to Lake Lander and 220 to Beaver pin machine Landon Hanna.

Outweighed by 44 pounds at heavyweight, sophomore Curt Mignot stayed with DuBois senior Nathan Pettiti for most of the first period, but was then headlocked to his back and was pinned just before the buzzer at 1:59. The fall gave the Beavers a 50-21 lead before making the turn back to 106 for the final match of the night.

There, two promising freshman took to the mat. Beaver Shea Bloom got the best of Bison Logan Gilbert to pick a fall in 1:39 to close out the hour long dual meet 56-21.

The Bison will be back on the mats Thursday December 13 when they travel to Wingate to take on Bald Eagle Area.

Clearfield won the Junior High match 54-39 in their first action of the season.
