Orlando, FL, United States (4E) – Charlie Crist, a former Republican Governor, announced on Friday that he has formally switched to become a Democrat.

It was a highly anticipated move by the independent Senate candidate before a potential bid for his old position in 2014. For the last two years, Crist has aligned himself with the Democrats and has endorsed President Obama’s reelection this year.

Crist was Florida’s governor from 2007 to 2011 but left the GOP after he lost to Marco Rubio in a Senate primary in 2010. He ran as an independent and lost to Senator Rubio in this year’s elections.

Crist is an active campaign surrogate for Obama in this year’s presidential campaign. During the Democratic National Convention in September, he said that the he did not leave the Republican Party, rather it was the party that left him.

The switch in party affiliation could be a first step for Christ’s gubernatorial run in the Sunshine State currently occupied by Republican Rick Scott. Analysts say that it would not be an easy battle for Crist if ever he decides to make a run for the Democratic nomination in 2014.

The Florida state Republican Party released a press release stating that Charlie Crist has the ability to play any character and there is seemingly no role that he cannot play.
