San Diego, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Senior guard Chase Tapley scored 23 points to lead four other teammates in double figures as No. 17 San Diego State extended its winning streak to seven via an 84-70 triumph over UC Santa Barbara Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl.
Tapley hit seven of 11 shots with six three-pointers while Jamaal Franklin added 14 points, five rebounds and four dimes to help the Aztecs defeat the Caughos (3-5) for the eighth straight time and improve to 7-1.
JJ O’Brien scored 12, Xavier Thames had 11 and James Rahon tallied 10 off the bench for San Diego State, which went on a tear after losing their opening game to Syracuse Nov. 11.
The Aztecs also extended their winning streak against teams from California to 27, the longest active winning run in the nation. They also pad their winning run in December to 20 games, third longest nationally.
The Aztecs buried 11 of 17 shots from beyond the arc for a season-high 64.7 percent and shot 55.8 percent overall.
Kyle Boswell scored a career-high 23 points. Alan Williams added 18 and Taran Brown scored 16 for the Gauchos, who dropped three of their last four contests.
UC Sata Barbara tasted the lead for the first and last time at 5-4 behind Brown’s three-point shot before the Aztecs took command when O’Brien sparked a 14-0 blast for an 18-5 cushion.
The Aztecs doubled the Gauchos’ output, 33-14, behind O’Brien’s layup and a three-pointer by Rahon before settling for a 46-29 halftime advantage.
In the second half, San Diego State grabbed its biggest lead at 64-37 behind a 13-0 run highlighted by Tapley’s nine points.
