Chicago, IL, United States (4E) – A 38-year-old parolee released from prison Saturday allegedly killed his grandmother the next day in her home in Joliet, Illinois.

In a statement, Will County Sheriff’s office stated Darrel C. Agerton has been charged with first-degree murder for the death of his 90-year-old grandmother, Veronica R. Schick.

Officials said deputies arrived at 7:30 p.m. Sunday to Schick’s home along Jessie Street and found the elderly woman dead.

An autopsy determined she had been beaten and strangled.

Agerton, who served time for an aggravated DUI conviction, stayed with his grandmother after being released.

He informed deputies that he called 911 after waking from a nap and finding his grandmother unresponsive on the floor.

Investigators established his involvement in the crime based on statements he made and physical evidence found at the scene.

Agerton is being held in jail on a $5 million bond.
