Louisville, KY, United States (4E Sports) – Louisville football coach Charlie Strong has decided to remain with the Cardinals, ending speculations that he will move and take over the program at Tennessee.
“My enthusiasm and heart is with the University of Louisville,” Strong said. “How do you walk away from someone who believes in you?”
Strong also clarified there was no back and forth negotiations between him and Tennessee.
“Tennessee called on Friday and an offer was made on Tuesday ,” Strong explained. “It never went back and forth.”
According to Sports Illustrated, Strong received a contract offer from Tennessee but declined it.
The magazine also reported that Strong and Louisville were ironing out details of a long-term deal that would be announced as soon as Thursday.
“Louisville athletics director Tom Jurich and I haven’t sat down and talked about the contract,” Strong said. “I just want to make sure my assistants are taken care of.”
This season, Strong led the No. 22 Cardinals to a share of the Big East Conference title and a BCS spot in the Sugar Bowl against Florida.
Strong was also named the conference’s coach of the year after steering Louisville to a 10-2 record.
Strong is 24-14 in three seasons at Louisville.
