No. 8 Stanford tops No. 17 UCLA, clinches Pac-12 football title
Stanford, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Kevin Hogan connected with Drew Terrell for the game-tying touchdown and Jordan Williamson buried the go-ahead field goal as No. 8 Stanford downed No. 17 UCLA, 27-24, to clinch the Pac-12 title Friday at Stanford Stadium.
Hogan completed 16 of 22 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown and ran for another while Stepfan Taylor added a scoring run for the Cardinal, who won their first conference title since the 1999 season.
The Cardinal will play the winner of the Big Ten championship game between Nebraska and Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl Jan. 1.
Terrell finished with 70 yards on four receptions while Taylor added 76 ground yards on 24 carries for the Cardinal.
Bruins quarterback Brent Hundley completed 26 of 34 heaves for 182 yards for the Bruins, who had a chance to tie the game but Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 52-yard field goal in the dying seconds of the game.
Johnathan Franklin rushed for 201 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns while Brett Hundley tallied 82 yards on 16 carries and a score for the Bruins.
Franklin gave the Bruins a 7-0 lead after a 51-yard touchdown run but Hogan answered with a two-yard rushing score to tie the game at seven. Hundley then completed a five-run to give UCLA a 14-7 advantage.
Taylor scored a one-yard run in the second period to tie the game anew at 14 and Williamson added a 37-yard field goal for a 17-14 lead at the break.
In the third period, Fairbairn made a 31-yard field goal and Franklin scored his second touchdown run, a 20-yard rush that put the Bruins ahead, 24-17.
In the fourth, Hogan threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Terrell and Williamson’s 36-yard field goal gave the Cardinal the lead for good.
