Kansas City, MO, United States (NewsBahn) – Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher reportedly killed his girlfriend, then himself early Saturday morning.
According to reports, Belcher shot and killed the girlfriend, whose name hasn’t been released, at 8 a.m. then drove to Arrowhead Stadium where he took his own life.
The Kansas City Star reported Belcher shot and killed himself in front of Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel as police arrived on the scene.
According to Kansas City police, via a CBS Sports.com report, “the player thanked both men before taking his life, and that Pioli and Crennel did not feel threatened.”
Authorities indicated they were investigating the matter, and the NFL has told the Charlotte Panthers to still travel to K.C. for the teams’ scheduled game Sunday.
“We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning,” the Chiefs said in a statement. “We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”
Belcher was a starter and one of the team’s top tacklers.
