Alonzo Gee’s buzzer-beater lifts Cavs over Hawks
Atlanta, GA, United States (4E Sports) – Alonzo Gee buried a follow-up shot just in the nick of time to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 113-111 victory over the Atlanta Hawks Friday at Philips Arena, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Gee, who finished with 13 points, grabbed the rebound off a miss by Dion Waiters from three-point range and scored the game-winning shot to give the Cavaliers just their fourth win in 16 games.
Jeremy Pargo led the Cavaliers with 22 points, Waiters had 21 points and seven assists and Anderson Varejao tallied 20 points and 18 boards.
Center Tyler Zeller came off the bench and scored 10 points, Daniel Gibson added nine and Omri Casspi contributed eight for Cleveland.
Josh Smith tallied 25 points, eight boards and three blocks while Louis Williams scored 18 points off the bench as the loss ended the Hawks’ six-game winning streak, dropping to 9-5.
Al Horford and Jeff Teague scored 15 points apiece, Devin Harris had 13 and DeShawn Stevenson added 12 as the Hawks starters finished in double digits.
Horford also had 11 boards while Teague distributed the ball effectively, finishing with seven dimes and had six steals.
After a close first quarter that ended with the Hawks ahead, 29-27, Atlanta then closed the second period with a 10-2 blast sparked by Ivan Johnson’s five points to grab a 67-56 lead at the break.
Varejao then waxed hot, scoring seven points in a 17-7 blast that moved the Cavaliers within 74-73, midway through the third period.
However, the Hawks closed the third canto with a 7-0 blast to take a 91-82 lead heading into the final canto.
Two foul shots by Smith gave the Hawks a 97-89 lead but the Cavaliers unleashed a 16-2 run keyed by Gibson, Pargo and Gee to grab a 105-99 advantage.
Smith sank a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to put the Hawks within 109-108 but Varejao made two foul shots for a 111-108 lead.
Atlanta then tied the game for the last time behind Williams’ three-pointer before Gee delivered the killer blow.
