Two people dead, including good Samaritan in Illinois highway crash
Springfield, IL, United States (4E) – A 58-year-old man attempting to secure his tire and an 80-year-old good Samaritan who came to help were hit and killed on Interstate 57 in Onarga Township, Illinois last Wednesday.
According to state police, Jimmy Lee Westbrook pulled onto the highway’s shoulder at 5:40 p.m. after losing a tire and rim from his car’s driver’s side. Westbrook crossed the expressway to retrieve it when a car struck him.
Jack S. Douglas, who halted and helped drag Westbrook out of the road, was hit by a vehicle when he tried to cross the road to his car to call for assistance.
Douglas was transported to Carle Hospital in Champaign where he was declared dead at 11:01 p.m. while Westbrook was pronounced dead at the scene, said police.
Authorities are still investigating the crashes but no citations were issued.
The northbound lanes of I-57 were shut down for about three hours.
