Waterloo, SC, United States (4E) – Deputies have started a probe into the body that was found engulfed in fire in a field located at Laurens County, South Carolina last Saturday.

Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain said somebody reported a brush fire around 4:30 p.m. along Flymm Smith Road in Waterloo and responding officers discovered a male body in the fire.

It appeared that the person died at the scene, said police.

Chastain informed FOX Carolina that an autopsy will be performed “but at this point we are treating it as suspicious.”

The Laurens County Coroner’s Office, sheriff’s office and fire officials are investigating the death as suspicious.

Police released no other details, and the autopsy is scheduled Monday.
