Boxer Hector Camacho declared brain dead, taken off life support
San Juan, Puerto Rico (4E Sports) – The family of boxing legend Hector “Macho” Camacho has decided to take the former fighter off life support after doctors declared him brain dead, according to celebrity website TMZ.
A family representative told TMZ that Camacho’s relatives are currently making funeral arrangements and deciding whether to hold services in Puerto Rico or New York.
The 50-year-old Camacho suffered several bullet wounds to the neck and face in a drive-by shooting Tuesday. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he went into cardiac arrest.
According to police, the former boxing champ was in the passenger seat of a car when another vehicle rolled up and someone opened fire, hitting Camacho several times.
The driver of Camacho’s car was killed in the attack. Cops say they recovered 10 bags of cocaine from the car, nine of which were in the driver’s possession.
Dr. Ernesto Torres, Centro Medico trauma center director in San Juan, declared Camacho brain dead after finishing all the tests on the boxer, saying “they have done everything they could”.
“We have done everything we could. We have to tell the people of Puerto Rico and the entire world that Macho Camacho has died, he is brain dead,” Torres said.
Initially, it was believed that Camacho would survive and recover, but lack of oxygen after his heart stopped worsened his condition.
A three-time world champion, Camacho compiled a record of 79-6-3 and won the super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight titles.
