Laurel, MD, United States (4E) – A 28-year-old Walmart employee was shot when gunfire erupted during a robbery Wednesday morning at a store in Laurel, Maryland.
Authorities said the shooting happened around 4:17 a.m. at a Walmart store located on Russett Green East and the victim was brought to a hospital with injury to his upper body.
Police said the gunman entered the store and demanded money from the employee.
After the employee handed over an undisclosed sum, the gunman took him in the parking lot and shot him before escaping.
Investigators who arrived at the scene said they discovered a burning vehicle nearby.
The vehicle may have been used by the suspect to flee, said police.
Officials described the suspect as a white male, wearing a dark mask, black pants, a black jacket and a gray or white sweatshirt with a hood.
Walmart spokeswoman, Ashley Hardie, named the incident “a senseless act of violence” and said the store is coordinating with the Laurel Police Department to find the suspect.
Hardie told FOX 5, “We take the safety of our associates and customers very seriously and will continue to work with police to provide a safe and secure environment.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Eric Wills of the Robbery Unit at 410-222-3432(3566) or Metro Crime Stoppers.
