Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – The original dress that actress Judy Garland wore when she played Dorothy in the 1939 film ‘Wizard of Oz’ has been sold at an auction in Beverly Hills for $480,000.

According to the auctioneer Darren Julien, the price fetched by the blue gingham dress made and designed by MGM’s Adrian Greenberg was in line with their expectations. The buyer of the dress remains unidentified.

Though quite pricey at almost half-a-million dollars, the Oz dress comes nowhere near Marilyn Monroe’s iconic white dress from the film ‘The Seven-Year Itch,’ which fetched $4.6 million and Audrey Hepburn’s Ascot dress from the film ‘My Fair Lady’ which was sold at $3.7 million. Both multi-million dollar dresses were sold in 2011.

The auction, held at Julien’s, also featured other iconic items under the hammer including the green dress worn by Julie Andrews in the 60′s film ‘The Sound of Music,’ which was sold for $38,000. Steve McQueen’s racing jacket and a purple skirt worn by Marilyn Monroe in the 1954 film ‘A River of No Return’ sold at $50,000 each.

Slices of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding cake, as well as of Prince Charles and Diana’s, were sold at $1,375 each.
