Storrs, CT, United States (4E Sports) – Freshman Breanna Stewart fired 21 points in her first foray into college play, helping No. 2 Connecticut demolish College of Charleston, 103-39, Sunday at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
The 6-4 Stewart shot 8-for-11 from the field, grabbed five boards and had four steals in 23 minutes of play as the Huskies captured their 17th straight season-opening win.
“It was great. I thought we played a great game. It was our first game of the season. We obviously had some rough patches, but it just shows that if continue to work hard in practice, then we will have a really fun season,” Stewart said after the game.
Stewart also lauded the unselfish plays of her teammates, giving the Huskies a total of 32 assists compared to just 10 by the Cougars.
“I think it is just the players’ mentality to be unselfish. The coaches don’t say anything about looking to make extra passes, because we are always all looking to make the extra pass,” she said.
Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis backed up Stewart with 19 points, 15 coming from beyond the arc while Stefanie Dolson added 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for th Huskis, who had six players in double figures.
“For a majority of the game I thought we got a lot done in a very efficient manner. That’s one of the things that we’ve been trying to do in our practices, A lot of our walk-throughs and film are just pointing out that there are opportunities to score, and score fairly quickly. We want to take advantage of those and I thought we did exactly that for the most part,” UConn head coach Geno Auriemma said.
The Cougars (1-1) were led by Alyssa Frye with 14 points and Latisha Harris’ 13.
With Stewart at the helm, the Huskies grabbed a 57-13 halftime lead as Charleston shot just 25 percent from the field.
