London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Juan Martin Del Potro unleashed a flurry of booming serves and sharp forehands to beat Roger Federer 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-3, reaching the semi finals of the ATP Tour Finals Saturday at O2 Arena.
After struggling with a wrist injury last season, Del Potro proved he’s back in the mix by winning several tournaments this season.
However, there’s no bigger achievement for Del Potro than beating the Swiss Master in two straight indoor tourneys, making the Argentine the first one to do such feat since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002.
Del Potro qualified to the semis of the ATP Tour, where he will face world’s no.1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia.
Federer already booked his seat in the semis after beating David Ferrer last Thursday.
Ferrer, Paris Masters champion, wrapped up his ATP Tour Finals stint with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Janko Tipsarević.
Ferrer, Del Potro, and Federer posted an identical 2-1 slate after three games in their group but the Argentine and Swiss were the ones to advance due to their better percentage of sets won.
