New Delhi, India (4E) – In what would allow Canadian companies to supply uranium and other nuclear shipments to New Delhi for the first time in nearly 40 years, India on Tuesday signed a civil nuclear deal with Canada.

The deal was signed during Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s six-day visit to India.

“The conclusion of the administrative arrangement with India will facilitate opportunities for Canadian companies to play a greater role in meeting India’s growing energy needs,” Harper said in a statement.

The deal also signals improvement in relations between the two countries years after India used Canadian technology to create its first nuclear bomb.

In 2010, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh agreed on a nuclear co-operation deal with Harper in Toronto.
