Yuma, AZ, United States (4E) – Suspected smugglers who were attempting to drive over a 14-foot-tall border fence Tuesday midnight were forced to abandon their plan when the Jeep became stuck on top of the barrier.
According to Border Patrol spokesman Spencer Tippets, agents who were patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border around the Imperial Sand Dunes in southeast California saw the Jeep Cherokee, which was propped up on a makeshift ramp, jammed atop the fence early Tuesday.
The empty vehicle was found about five miles west of the Colorado River and the Arizona state line.
In a statement, U.S. Border Patrol stated “suspects attempting to drive a vehicle over the border fence fell prey to their own devices.”
The Jeep’s drivers escaped into Mexico, while the vehicle and the makeshift ramp have been seized by officials.
It was not known what the vehicle may have been carrying.
The incident is under investigation and no details on the suspects were available.
