NFL, players pledge $1M for Sandy relief, recovery efforts

New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – The National Football League and its players have pledged a $1 million donation to the American Red Cross to support relief and recovery efforts for those affected by the devastation inflicted by Hurricane Sandy.

“We are pleased that NFL owners and players have joined together once again to support communities and families impacted by Hurricane Sandy,” Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said in a joint statement Thursday.

“This contribution on behalf of all 32 clubs and players throughout the league will help the American Red Cross assist people in need in the affected areas. We salute the dedication of those who have been working so hard on the rescue, relief and recovery effort,” they added.

The NFL and its network television partners will also run pregame and in-game messages and mentions to promote donations during this weekend’s games, beginning with Thursday Night Football.

Before playing the national anthem, a special announcement will be made to recognize those impacted by the storm and salute first responders and others involved with the relief effort.

There will also be on-air mentions and a crawl on the bottom of the screen during portions of all games on all networks pointing fans to the American Red Cross website (redcross.org) and text-to-give line (text REDCROSS to 90999 to give a $10 donation).

Earlier, the New York Yankees have announced that they will donate $500,000 to the American Red Cross to aid the relief efforts in the Tri-State area.

“The damage and destruction to the Tri-State area caused by Hurricane Sandy is daunting, but we have seen the great resiliency of this region before,” said Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner.

“As a neighbor and community member, the Yankees embrace our role of stepping forward and assisting the American Red Cross, which comes to the aid of so many people through their tireless efforts.”

The storm flooded streets and tunnels in the New York area, halting mass transit and cutting power to millions of homes and businesses.
