Miami, FL, United States (NewsBahn) – The Miami Marlins selected Mike Redmond as their new manager, hoping the team’s ex-catcher can help the franchise become a winner again with a three-year deal he agreed to.

Redmond was a Marlins catcher from 1998-2004, serving as Ivan Rodriguez’s backup on the 2003 title-winning team.

Redmond retired as a player in 2010, after 22 games with the Tribe and a five-year stint with the Twins.

Former manager Ozzie Guillen was classy in his remarks about the new hire, tweeting: “Congrats Mike Redmond. Good luck, buddy. You have great guys going to play for you.”

Guillen was dismissed after an awful season in which the Marlins stumbled in the NL East and dealt away key players like Hanley Ramirez, who was brought in to be a star but struggled before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
