Manhattan, NY, United States (4E) – The 50-year-old nanny who allegedly murdered two New York children in her care last Thursday, woke up Sunday and asked about her own family.
According to reports, Yoselyn Ortega, who stabbed to death six-year-old Lucia Krim and her two-year-old brother, Leo, inside their apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, is no longer in a medically induced coma and has started to talk a little after undergoing surgery.
Ortega, who attempted suicide after stabbing the two children, had been unable to speak since the incident.
Investigators has came back to the New York Hospital where the nanny has been admitted but it was reported that Ortega refused to answer questions and has lawyered up.
Her doctor was able to talk to her and she “asked about her family.”
The nanny has reportedly been burdened with mental, physical and financial problems in the months prior to the incident.
Neighbors interviewed by The New York Post said Ortega, who appeared nervous, has often complained of money problems in recent months.
Officials revealed that the woman has informed some people that she was thinking of seeing a therapist, but it was not clear whether she ever did.
Ortega’s neighbor, Ruben Diaz, noted that the nanny has lost a lot of weight. He added that “she looked very unhealthy. It looked like she was going through some problems.”
Celia Ortega, the woman’s sister stated that “she snapped, we don’t understand what happened to her mind.”
Police said the mother and her other child, a three-year-old daughter, has just returned from a swimming lesson to the La Rochelle apartment building at around 5:30 p.m. when she noticed that there were no lights on the second floor apartment.
She went back downstairs and checked with the doorman, asking about the nanny and other children.
After being told that the doorman did not see them leaving, she went back upstairs and found her two children dead in the tub, with their nanny sprawled wounded beside them.
It was later reported that Ortega, started slashing her own throat as Krim entered the room.
The children were taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Ortega was transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, under police custody.
The father, CNBC executive Kevin Krim, was on a business trip in San Francisco when the accident happened. He flew home Thursday, police met him at the airport and brought him to the hospital where his wife was waiting.
Originally from the West Coast, the Krims moved from San Francisco to New York a few years ago. Neighbors said that the family are happy and loving.
Ortega, a native of the Dominican Republic, had been a naturalized U.S. citizen for 10 years. She resides in Manhattan with her son, her sister and her niece.
Police said that friends had introduced the family to Ortega, who has been working for them for the last two years.
