NY Times backs Obama’s presidential bid

New York, NY, United States (4E) – The New York Times on Saturday endorsed President Barack Obama in his reelection bid on Nov. 6.

The publication cited their reasons for supporting the president which included his policies on the economy, foreign policy, health care, civil rights and his choice of justices to the Supreme Court.

The editorial page stated that the Obama administration has been resolute in putting al-Qaeda’s leadership on the run, which resulted to the death of its leader Osama bin Laden. It also credited the president for ending the war in Iraq and blasted GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s plan to keep thousands of U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East nation.

No Republican presidential candidate has received the backing of the editorial since Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. The Times likewise blamed GOP congressional members for blocking the president’s policies, which it claimed prevented the country from sinking into a second Great Depression.

Obama, the country’s first black president, was also by hailed by the paper for his civil rights policies that brought about the legislation that ended the exclusion of gays and lesbians in military service. The Times also noted Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage rights.

The editorial also warned that an election victory by Mitt Romney would roll back gains in health care reform and pave way for a conservative justice in the Supreme Court which could put women’s rights, voting rights and gays and lesbians’ marriage rights in jeopardy.
