Bogota, Colombia (4E) – Colombian road workers accidentally discovered a vein of precious gem emeralds while doing repair work in northwestern Boyaca region’s remote area locally known as The Devil’s Nose.
Hundreds of treasure hunters immediately rushed to the remote area to cash in on the discovery, prompting the police to cordon off the steep mountain road for public safety.
In a statement to local broadcaster RCN, construction worker Julian Correa said that he discovered a shiny substance while working there.
He said that since he was not from the area he asked his fellow worker, who told him of it being an emerald.
“Some people found emerald deposits valued at $2,750 to $5,500 as much as they could get,” a local resident Esteban Pena said.
