New York, NY, United States (4E) – Microsoft officially launched the Windows 8 operating system today in New York City. Microsoft’s latest operating system can be downloaded by users for their personal computers and touchscreen tablets. The software giant declared that there are more than 1,000 computers currently running Windows 8.
Windows 8 can also run on personal computers featuring touchscreens. According to Windows and Windows Live division president Steven Sinofsky, devices with touchscreens “are the best PCs ever made.” Windows 8 was publicly tested for over 1,240,000,000 hours and in 190 countries.
“No product anywhere receives this kind of testing anywhere in the world,” Sinofsky said.
Aside from launching the Windows 8 operating system, Microsoft also announced the opening of the Windows Store. Users will be able to purchase and download apps through the Store.
Microsoft has sold an estimated 670 million Windows 7 licenses.
Sinofsky said that’s the “fastest adoption of any OS ever. The first release of Windows to build on cloud services as a major part of the operating system.”
Along with the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft also introduced its Surface tablet. The Surface comes with a price tag of $599 with a touch keyboard cover.
“Windows 8 is simply the best release of Windows ever,” Sinfosky added.
