Wasatch County, UT, United States (4E) – A 37-year-old Utah native, who has been accused of date raping four different women in July, has been found dead of apparent suicide Tuesday, four days after he bailed out of jail.
Authorities said that Gregory Peterson was discovered by a bail bondsman in his Wasatch County cabin while checking on him because of his ankle monitor’s weakening signal.
Sheriff Todd Bonner said that it was unclear whether a note had been left.
The Salt Lake County district attorney indicted Peterson with a range of crimes that include rape, assault, and forcible sexual abuse against the four women. He was awaiting trial on 26 charges, 24 of which were felonies.
Peterson spent three months in jail before he was released Friday on a $2 million bail.
It was reported that he allegedly lured four different women under the pretext of a date and sexually abused them.
Prosecutors said one woman claimed Peterson kept her in his mother’s house for several days while a woman with an expired visa was threatened by Peterson with deportation.
The suspect coerced the women to participate in sexual acts by directing their attention to the firearms he possessed.
Officers noted that his monitor showed “activity” early in the afternoon.
Bonner acknowledged that Peterson had several weapons inside his home.
Cara Tangaro, one of two lawyers representing Peterson, who expressed her shock upon hearing the news, said in an interview with CNN that “if we thought he had been suicidal at all, we obviously would have taken that into account, or tried to get him help, or talk him out of bailing out.”
