Pregnant Louisiana woman stabbed by husband, fetus dies
Walker, LA, United States (4E) – A 31-year-old man from Walker, Louisiana has been arrested Tuesday after attacking his pregnant wife and forcibly removing their unborn child from her belly.
Livingston Parish authorities reported that Jeffrey Reynolds allegedly cut the fetus from his 28-year-old wife, Patricia Reynolds, who is seven and a half months pregnant.
The woman survived, after doctors managed to stabilize her condition, but her unborn child died.
Sheriff Jason Ard said that Reynolds’ wife was on the floor, when he took a sharp instrument and actually cut her stomach area open and pulled the baby out.
He added that “the baby did not make it. The woman was taken to the hospital and we’ve received information that she’s in stable condition.”
An emergency room nurse neighbor Julie Collins, who said she and paramedics assisted the woman at the scene, heard the victim’s husband claiming he had ingested bath salts.
According to reports, bath salts are synthetic drugs banned last year by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The users of bath salts recount effects resembling those of LSD, cocaine and methamphetamines.
Ard noted that while using bath salts may cause erratic behavior, drug testing would determine what might have been in the system of the suspect during the attack.
Investigators are collecting evidence inside the couple’s home and a warrant has been issued for toxicology tests on Reynolds.
Collins also said that the victim’s greatest concern while receiving first aid Tuesday was her six-year-old son arriving home and seeing her with the stab wounds.
A relative picked up the boy at school.
Neighbors, Henry and Joyce Bolen, said the young family that lives next door was always quiet and stayed out of trouble.
Collins said Reynolds is a nice man, but he was “howling like a wolf,” after police restrained him.
Police officers who responded to the 911 call, which was primarily classified as a medical emergency, had to subdue the suspect.
Reynolds has been charged with first-degree feticide and attempted second-degree murder.
