Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ has earned the top spot on this weekend’s box office chart, gathering an estimated $30.2 million.
Despite topping the chart, PA4 is still way behind its predecessors, with PA3 gathering $52.6 million only three days after being released, and PA2 with $40.7 million.
This is not a bad thing considering the $5 million production budget of the latest PA installment, and it raked in an additional $26.5 million from overseas screenings.
“This played the way sequels often play, in terms of becoming stronger internationally. There is a lot of life left in this franchise,” Paramount president of domestic marketing and distribution Megan Colligan said.
Colligan also said that “Paranormal Activity 5″ will be released in October 2013.
Lagging behind PA4 were Warner Brothers’ “Argo,” which raked in $ 16.6 million, now on its second week with a total of $43.19 million; third is Sony’s “Hotel Transylvania,” which garnered $13.5 million, with a total of $119 million after four weeks of opening.
“Taken 2″ (20th Century Fox) grossed $13.4 million this week, with its three-week total of $105.9 million. “Alex Cross” (Summit Entertainment) comes at fifth with $11.75 million.
