Miami, FL, United States (4E) – A car racing on Flagler Street and 58th Avenue in Miami, Florida crashed head on with an SUV carrying a family Saturday, resulting in the death of father and son while the mother and younger son were left fighting for their lives.
According to police officials, a Toyota Scion, speeding westbound with two other vehicles at around 2 a.m., lost control and collided into a family of four in a Ford Expedition.
Miami Police spokesman Willie Moreno said that the impact killed the 43-year-old father, Jose Serrano and his 15-year-old son, German Serrano.
The mother, 42-year-old Carmen Orta and the second child, 12-year-old Gabriel Serrano, were taken at the Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.
The third fatality, the 20-year-old passenger in the Toyota Scion, Ivan Rodriquez Jr., was declared dead on the scene while the driver, 19-year-old Alejandro Hernandez, who was thrown from the car, is being treated with severe injuries in the same hospital.
Moreno said that the impact is so massive that it tossed the Expedition around and caused the entire engine to be pushed into its own passenger compartment.
He added that the vehicle continued to rotate an additional three times before coming to a resting point.
Police believe that the Scion was traveling at an “excessive high rate of speed,” probably around 100 mph. The car’s engine block was torn off its compartment due to the force of the crash.
Moreno said that search is on for the two other cars involved in the race. He also revealed that the other car could be a black Chevrolet Impala.
Authorities are checking for possible footage of the accident from local businesses.
