Dacota, United States (4E) – Former U.S. Sen. George McGovern died at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD on early Sunday. He was 90. McGovern was an ex-World War II bomber pilot.
He had lost the 1972 presidential race to Richard Nixon despite pledging to end the Vietnam War. The three-term senator is famously remembered for bringing youths, women and minorities into the Democratic Party in the White House campaign.
“We are blessed to know that our father lived a long, successful and productive life advocating for the hungry, being a progressive voice for millions and fighting for peace,” his family said in a statement.
Responding to the news, President Barack Obama said McGovern dedicated his life for the country he loved, adding that he was a “statesman of great conscience and conviction.” Vice President Joe Biden called McGovern a friend and said he was “honored” to serve with him in the Senate.
Former president Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in a joint statement, said McGovern always worked for common man and was especially committed to feed the hungry both at home as well as across the world.
