Dallas, TX, United States (4E Sports) – Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki is expected to miss the start of the regular-season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his swelling right knee Friday.
The 35-year-old Nowitzki will begin practicing with the Mavs after at least three weeks of rehabilitation.
Nowitzki has been dealing with his knee problem since last season’s training camp and went on to finish the 2011-2012 season, when he posted one of his worst statistical years (21.6 points and 6.8 rebounds).
The German gunslinger tried to play through the pain until the end of the 2012-2013 season but the continuous swelling of his knee prompted the Mavs medical staff to schedule an arthroscopic operation for Nowitzki.
“We’ve got to really buckle down,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle told ESPN Friday. “Six weeks is a long time. A week and a half of it is non-season time, so that’s a bit of a plus, but NBA games are hard and we’re going to have to have everybody ready to play. Simple as that.”
