Washington, United States (4E) – General Joseph Dunford has been nominated as NATO’s new commander in Afghanistan.

U.S. President Barack Obama’s nomination will replace General John Allen, who will now assume the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander of U.S. European Command.

Obama expressed full confidence in Dunford’s leadership, experience that could help him successfully serve as the next commander of U.S. and NATO’s International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan.

The Senate is yet to approve Dunford’s nomination. However, if approved, Obama hoped that Dunford, who currently serves as Assistant Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, would allow U.S. to responsibly close the more than a decade-long war in Afghanistan.
