Florham Park, NJ, United States (4E Sports) – The New York Jets have placed cornerback Darrelle Revis on injured-reserve list to create a roster spot for another safety after Eric Smith went down with sprained knee in practice Thursday.
“I know I had said before about Darrelle that I’d like to wait for him to have surgery before we placed him on IR or not,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “Unfortunately with that time situation, you’ve had Eric Smith being out this week, we’re going to need that roster spot.”
Smith suffered a sprained knee in practice Thursday and will not play against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday.
By putting Revis on injured reserve, he can use a roster spot to acquire a safety by Saturday.
Ryan delayed putting Revis on injured reserve, hoping he could return from surgery and be able to play should the Jets reach Super Bowl XLVII in February,
“When I said it was a 0.002 percent chance? Well, it’s not that high,” Ryan said. “I was holding out hope but the more information we got, I realized that wouldn’t be good for Darrelle either.”
Revis is currently working out in the team’s facility to strengthen the injured knee before he undergoes surgery.
The Jets’ defense has suffered tremendously without Revis, one of the league’s best defensive players.
The Jets (2-3) already have two players who underwent surgery recently. Receiver Santonio Holmes had surgery on his foot Wednesday and Ryan expects him to be back for the Jets’ offseason training program.
Linebacker Josh Mauga also had surgery Friday to repair a torn pectoral muscle.
