Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (4E Sports) – Middleweight king Anderson Silva has promised fans a good fight when he takes on Stephan Bonnar in his second foray in the light heavyweight division Saturday at UFC 153.
“I owe this fight to all my Brazilian fans,” Silva said. “I want to give back to everyone and hope to give a good fight.”
Silva (32-4) made the 205-pound limit during Friday’s weigh-in, tipping the scale at 202 pounds for his first light heavyweight match since beating Forrest Griffin in 2009. Bonnar (14-7) weighed in at exactly 205 pounds.
A heavy underdog, Bonnar said he has not adjusted his fighting style for his bout against Silva, considered the greatest mixed martial artist in history.
“I’m not going to do anything different than I do every time I step in the Octagon,” Bonnar said.
Silva agreed to fight Bonnar at UFC 153 after featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo suffered an injury that forced him out of a bout against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar that was supposed to be the main event.
Meanwhile, heavyweights Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, a former UFC interim champion, weighed 243 pounds. His opponent, Dave Herman, tipped the scale at 244 pounds.
The remaining main-card bouts include light heavyweights Glover Teixeira against Fabio Maldonado, former top welterweight contender Jon Fitch battling highly touted Erick Silva, light heavyweights Phil Davis against Wagner Prago and welterweights Demian Maia tackling Rick Story.
