Shanghai, China (4E Sports) – Roger Federer became the first player to reach 300 weeks on top of the ATP rankings after defeating compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 Thursday in the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
Federer, 17-time Grand Slam champion, is guaranteed to secure the top ranking in the ATP Tour following Thursday’s gutty victory.
The Swiss Master started off rhythm, putting him in a brink of elimination in the second set. However, Federer stepped up just in time and begun to produce a succession of winners.
Federer willed himself in the tiebreaker in the second set and went on to dominate his friend in the decider, arranging a quarterfinal match with 10th-seed Marin Cilic of Croatia.
Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray also progressed to the final eight after blasting their respective opponent. Djokovic subdued Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-3 while Andy Murray blasted Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-2.
World’s no.1 Victoria Azarenka moved to the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Generali Ladies Linz after overwhelming Romania’s Simona Halep 6-1, 6-1 Thursday.
Azarenka came up with a more fluid baseline game than she had in the first round, torching Halep with 20 winners.
The Belarusian netter is set to take on Croatia’s Petra Martic in the quarterfinals. Martic bested Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 to book a final eight showdown with Azarenka.
Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic also made it to the quarterfinals after downing Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-3 Thursday. Ivanovic is in a collision force with Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens, who downed Mallory Burdette of the United States 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
