Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – “Taken 2″ starring Liam Neeson has topped weekend box-office record for gathering a cool $105 million for its worldwide opening.

The thrilling sequel has grossed $50 million in North America alone, and the other $55 million came from theatres all over the world, way more than what the first film of the same title has grossed when it was released in 2009.

The film, released by 20th Century Fox and EuropaCorp, tells the story of retired CIA agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) and his family, who get into a twisted kidnap situation in Istanbul brought about by the brother of the man who abducted Mills’ daughter in the first film.

The other films to top this weekend’s box office, according to Hollywood.com were, Sony Pictures Animation’s “Hotel Transylvania,” now on its second week, with $26 million, Universal Pictures’ “Pitch Perfect” with $21.6 million, Sony Pictures’ “Looper” with $12.2 million. Tim Burton’s “Frankenweenie” (Disney) opened with $11.5 million, but is expected to boost up in the coming weeks as Halloween nears.
