Beijing, China (4E Sports) – Belarusian star Victoria Azarenka and Russian diva Maria Sharapova arranged a scintillating finals showdown in the China Open after downing their respective semifinals opponents Saturday at the Olympic Green Tennis Center.
Azarenka toppled Marion Bartoli of France 6-4, 6-2 while Sharapova downed Li Na 6-4, 6-0 to set up a championship clash between the two best women’s netters in the world.
On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic advanced to the China Open men’s singles finals following a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Germany’s Florian Meyer.
The five-time Grand Slam champion is set to take on Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tsonga took the first set on a score of 6-1 and was leading 4-1 into the second set when Spain’s Feliciano Lopez retired due to injury.
Meanwhile, home favorite Kei Nishikori booked his place in the championship round of the Japan Open after blasting Marcos Baghdatis 6-2, 6-2.
The no.8 seed Nishikori will face another rising star in Canada’s Milos Raonic, who pulled off a stunning 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 win over US Open champion Andy Murray.
