Beijing, China (4E Sports) – World’s no.1 Novak Djokovic progressed to the semifinal round of the China Open after dismantling Jurgen Melzer of Austria, 6-1, 6-2 Friday at the Olympic Green Tennis Center.
After struggling in the opening round, Djokovic continued his smooth sailing in the China Open tourney as he only needed 53 minutes to dispatch Melzer in their quarterfinal match.
Djokovic will next take on Germany’s Florian Meyer, who toppled wild card qualifier Zhang Ze 6-3, 6-4 on his 29th birthday.
Spain’s Feliciano Lopez bested Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to arrange a semifinals showdown with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who defeated Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-2.
On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova also cruised to the semifinals of the China Open after Angelique Kerber retired due to an ankle injury.
Sharapova easily took the first set in a score of 6-0 and was leading 3-0 into the second set when Kerber decided to withdraw from the game because of a nagging pain in her ankle.
Victoria Azarenka also booked her place in the final four with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win over Italy’s Romina Oprandi while home crowd favorite Li Na upset Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-2.
