Pittsburgh, PA, United States (NewsBahn) – Homer Bailey had it going on Friday night, tossing a no-hitter in leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
It marked the fifth no-hitter in team history for the playoff-bound club.
“My defense covered my back and made the pitcher look good,” Bailey said humbly to FOX Sports Reds. “I just kept trying to put up zeroes … to help us try to get the best record in the National League.”
Bailey was joined by his thrilled teammates on the mound following his feat.
“I look forward to talking to my family about this later on,” he added.
Bailey has plenty to boast about, erasing the Pirates on 115 pitches, recording 10 strikeouts to just one walk. The Reds also committed an error.
Todd Frazier drove in Brandon Phillips with a sac fly in the first inning, accounting for Cincy’s lone run.
Bailey improved to 13-10 on the season, reducing his ERA to 3.75.
A.J. Burnett was the Pirates tough-luck loser, falling to 16-9 despite scattering seven hits in eight frames.
