Lincoln, NE, United States (4E Sports) – Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne announced his plans to retire Wednesday at a news conference.
The 75-year-old Osborne will leave his position Jan. 1 and become AD emeritus. He plans to stay on the job for an additional six months to assist in the transition to a new athletic director.
”At some point, whether you’re able to function or not, just the perception that you’re getting old can get in the way,” Osborne said. ”I don’t want to be one of those guys everybody is walking around wringing their hands trying to figure out what are we going to do with him? That happens sometimes.”
The AD since the fall of 2007 when Steve Pederson was fired, Osborne is better known for his time spent as Nebraska’s football coach.
He guided the Huskers for 25 years and won national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997.
